The International Space Station: Building for the Future
Praxis 2008 | 389 | ISBN: 0387781447 | PDF | 8 Mb
This book will cover in great detail the newest construction and uses of the International Space Station. The new volume will continue on from the end of Creating the International Space Station by David Harland and John Catchpole (published in January 2002 by Springer Praxis), providing flight by flight details and relevant political and "behind the scenes" activities as are necessary to explain why certain decisions, including flight re-scheduling and crew-reassignment, are made. Part 1 will open with a chapter recounting the political history of the ISS, including how and why the program came into being. Chapter 2 will look at the four partners involved (USA, Russia, ESA, and Brazil), with a brief *** of what each partner is bringing to the program. Chapter 3 will study the initial goals of the program, how they have changed and whether they have been met. Chapter 4 will summarize the program at the end of Creating the International Space Station. Part 2 will look at the findings and recommendations of the International Space Station Management and Cost Evaluation Task Force. Part 3 will examine the original flight coverage, including the beginning of the construction of the Integrated Truss Structure, and will cover the station’s occupation from the start of Expedition 4, through to the end of Expedition 6. Part 4 will start with the loss of STS-107 – Columbia – and explain its effect on both the International Space Station and the American space effort in general. It will cover the Expedition 7 occupation through to the beginning of Expedition 13, concentrating on the work of the two-person "Caretaker Crews". Part 5 will study the recovery from the STS-107 tragedy and the re-commencement of the ISS construction, overcoming the grounding of the Space Shuttle fleet. It will cover the remainder of the Expedition 13 occupation, the return to three-person occupation, through to the end of Expedition 15 and the installation of Node-2, the final American module. Part 6 will briefly look forward to the installation of the International Partner’s modules as well as the introduction of the European and Japanese robotic cargo vehicles. The book will end with a glance at plans for the Orion spacecraft and Ares-1 launch vehicle, and the delivery of Node-2, the final piece of American hardware. Three Appendices will up-date those published in Creating the International Space Station: Appendix A will list ISS hardware descriptions, Appendix B will be a complete ISS Flight Log and Appendix C will be a full ISS Extravehicular Activity Log. ...

Three key concepts of space reflect a significant recent development in human geography and social theory. The first is the concept of space as product, according to which space is seen as produced by social, political, and economic forces rather than as a natural given; an analogous concept is Henri Lefebvre’s “production of space,” which occurs at different scales, from the globe to the body, from cosmos to hearth.2 The second key concept is that of space as process, according to which space is conceived as multiple, coeval, and relational; as such, space inevitably engages other terms such as place and locality, and it calls attention to its multidirectional flows and its historical contingency. The third concept is that of space as productive, according to which space becomes a dynamic force that generates changes, shapes experiences, and demands narratives; as such, space constitutes what Massey calls “a simultaneity of stories-so-far,” a discursive mechanism that at once foregrounds the multiplicity and heterogeneity of space and necessitates human intervention by way of narrativization and theoretization....

Ever wanted to know what the astronauts eat when they re in space? Now, you can do better than that! You can actually make what they eat in your own kitchen! And while you re waiting for your delicious (hah!) space food to cook, you can read about the history of the space program, space food preparation methods, and even get to know many of the astronauts that have dined in space. Did they find the food appetizing? What did they miss most when they were in space? How did NASA try to improve the food over the years? Charles Bourland is a retired long-time director of the NASA space food program, and Gregory Vogt, also a former NASA education specialist, helped train the astronauts. Both veterans of the U.S. space program have combined here to provide authentic recipes not only of foods that were actually served during various space missions (including Skylab, Apollo, the space shuttle, and the International Space Station) but also some of the astronauts favorite recipes and even space recipes from famous TV chefs Rachael Ray and Emeril Lagasse! You will be amused and amazed at the information you find here. And you will be ready to impress your friends and family with your new culinary skills. Finally, you will have a much better understanding of what it really is to live in space, for weeks or even months at a time. Any volunteers for a trip to Mars? If you are a food lover, maybe not after you read this book and serve up some of its culinary treats... ...

The ICPMSE-6 meeting continued the discussions started in 1992 when this conference series was started. The proceedings of ICPMSE-6 conference contain the latest developments in the area of the effects of the space environment on materials and structures and the ways to prevent and/or reduce them. For the first time, information on environment factors affecting the behavior of materials in GEO and MEO orbits was included in the topics. The main mandate of the meeting, as in the past years was to: + promote the dissemination of experimental data and experience among research organizations, and scientists gathered in ground and flight experiments; + learn about the latest advances in the field of material's and structures' protection in space environment and to provide a basis for interaction and utilization of ideas; + review the latest research and development in topics such as: effects of space environment on materials and structures, predictive models for interaction of materials with space environment factors, and alternative ways for protection from space environment. ...

There are many ways to explore space. In Space Exploration, students will learn about the human quest to discover what’s out there. Students will see the challenges and benefits of space exploration, including the development of rocket science, a look back at the ‘Space Race’ and a history of manned space travel. A special section on the Saturn V rocket will give students insight into the extraordinary measures taken to put us on the Moon, including a fun, hands-on activity that will let them build their own rocket-complete with fuel! This program is based on the concepts outlined in the National Science Education Standards for Earth Science: Structure of the Earth System, Earth’s History and Earth in the solar system.
