Season Five of the Fox television show The X-Files (1997-98) was notable for several reasons, the most significant being that the show was at the height of its creativity. The episodes during the fifth season were consistently well written and directed, and they included a good mix of quirky, stand-alone shows as well as episodes that advanced the already-established alien-conspiracy-theory storyline. This season also marked the last year of filming in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, as the principals insisted production be moved to Los Angeles. In addition, during the previous summer, the show's first theatrical film, The X-Files: Fight the Future had just wrapped. As a critical step to setting up the plot for the feature film's release the following summer, this would be the first season to have a specific outlined plan advancing the story arc (rather than the more spontaneous evolution of episodes created during earlier seasons). During Season Five, Mulder (David Duchovny) begins to doubt his belief in an unknown truth, questioning the relevance of The X-Files, while Scully (Gillian Anderson) begins to believe in the alien conspiracy. Shows from this year include "The Unusual Suspects," noteworthy for starring The Lone Gunmen; "Kill Switch," taken from a story by novelist William Gibson about the uploading of memory and consciousness onto the Internet to become joined with a collective consciousness outside of one's physical body; a two-part mythology story exploring Scully's abduction and pregnancy; the offbeat, black-and-white "Post-Modern Prometheus" about a "lovelorn monster with a Cher fetish," told in the style of a James Whale film; and "The End," the season finale, which provided more questions than answers and served to set up the theatrical film. Fox Home Video's The X-Files: The Complete Fifth Season offers all 20 episodes and extras across six discs, presented in full-frame (1.33:1) with audio in Dolby 2.0 Surround. Supplements include a commentary by series creator Chris Carter on "The Post-Modern Prometheus," commentary from director John Shibian on "The Pine Bluff Variant," the documentary "The Truth About Season Five" (30 min.), the TV special "Inside The X-Files" (46 min.), a look at the special effects with commentary by Paul Rabwin, deleted scenes with optional commentary by Chris Carter, international clips, promotional spots, and the DVD-ROM game "Earthbound." Like the prior boxes, this collection comes packaged in the folding DVD digipak in a paperboard slip-case.

Season Two of Fox-TV's The X-Files was when it started to gain a ground swell of popularity, and according to many X-philes, some of the best episodes of the series arrived during this time. Starting with the split of Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and the closing of the FBI "X-Files" at the end of Season One, the following episodes initially found Scully teaching at Quantico while Mulder was assigned to the mundane detail of electronic surveillance. But before long we are introduced to Mulder's new partner Alex "Ratboy" Krycek (Nicholas Lea), the Alien Bounty Hunter (Brian Thompson), and "X" (Steven Williams), the inscrutable informant who take the place of the fallen "Deep Throat." It was a memorable season, creating many dilemmas that would not be resolved until later, so if you're prepared to fork out the bucks for Fox's 7-DVD set, The X-Files: The Complete Second Season includes such notables as "The Host" (with the creepy Fluke Boy), the two-part abduction arc "Duane Barry" and "Ascension," episodes where we meet both Mulder's and Scully's families ("Colony," "One Breath"), the cliffhanger "Anasazi," and the unforgettable "Humbug," featuring the Jim Rose Freak Show (the first script from Darin Morgan, who played Fluke Boy in "The Host"). And if you really know your X-Files, you know that Gillian Anderson was pregnant during the first part of the season, so for fun you can review those early episodes and debate if series creator Chris Carter did a good job of hiding her impending motherhood. As is standard with Fox's X-Files DVD boxes, the final disc includes various supplements, this time the 15-minute documentary "The Truth about Season Two"; 12 brief segments with Carter, who discusses individual episodes (which can be played individually or sequentially); nine 60-second "Behind the Truth" promos that originally ran on the F/X cable network during the show's syndicated run; three behind-the-scenes clips (including Anderson's insect-eating turn in "Humbug"); four deleted scenes from the season (Did you know the original "X" was a woman? Of course you did); all of the promo spots that ran on Fox during the initial TV run; short clips of the show dubbed into foreign languages for international broadcast; and additional DVD-ROM content. It all comes in a folding DVD digipak that's sure to impress friend, foes, and alien bounty hunters alike.

By the time the Fox network's "The X-Files" reached its seventh season (1999-2000), the show was limping along, seemingly out of ideas for weekly freaks and monsters and grappling with a conspiracy theory which had become indecipherable. The media hype surrounding the show and internal fighting over salaries, coupled with the two leads (Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny) chasing after feature film careers, had begun to eclipse the actual series, causing its uniqueness to fade along with its audience. The two-part season opener "The Sixth Extinction" and "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati" are slow and ponderous, offering no answers and no suspense. "Requiem," the season finale, is a tired cliffhanger that leaves one wishing the show had ended a year earlier. Sandwiched between are plenty of stinker episodes, although a few good turns kept the season from being a complete loss. For instance, "Honey" is an intriguing tongue-in-cheek tale of a creature who tries a 12-step program to control his unusual eating disorder; "Millennium" gave those who actually liked the short-lived Chris Carter series a chance to see Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) in action again; and "Hollywood A.D." is amusing, directed by Duchovny and starring Tea Leoni and Gary Shandling as Mulder and Scully in a reality-TV version of an X-Files case. Unfortunately, these few highlights weren't enough to make up for such debacles as "Fight Club," a failed attempt at humor, "First Person Shooter," a failed attempt at video-game silliness, or "All Things," a failed attempt at directing by Gillian Anderson. Most fans were losing hope by the end of the season, aware that the previously groundbreaking show was just breaking down. Fox's DVD release of The X-Files: The Complete Seventh Season offers anamorphic transfers (1.78:1) with Dolby 2.0 Surround audio. The six-disc box set includes the following episodes: "The Sixth Extinction," "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati," "Hungry," "Millennium," "Rush," "the Goldberg Variation," "Orison," "The Amazing Maleeni," "Signs and Wonders," "Sein and Zeit," "Closure," "X-Cops," "First Person Shooter," "Theef," "En Ami," "Chimera," "All Things," "Brand X," "Hollywood A.D.," "Fight Club," "Je Souhaite," and "Requiem." Extras include commentary on three episodes, a 30-minute commentary entitled "The Truth About Season 7," 17 international clips, nine deleted scenes, profiles on Skinner and Samantha Mulder, and 13 special-effects featurettes.

The Lost Masters: Introduction

In the spring of 1996, word quickly spread of a 19-CD set called "The Lost Masters" consisting of studio outtakes, home demos, and rehearsal sessions from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band from the years 1977-1983. In addition to the 19 discs, two "Best of" sets would also be released and would include bonus tracks not found elsewhere in the set.The discs were to be released individually in groups of five or so and the first five surfaced in early summer.

The CDs can basically be broken down into 5 segments: Darkness outtakes 2 CDs, River outtakes 2 CDs, home demos 4 CDs, rehearsal sessions 5 CDs, and Hollywood Hills garage tapes 3 CDs.

Rounding out the set are the complete Nebraska sessions, Born in the USA outtakes, and "Big Expendables", which consists of studio outtakes from The River, home demos, and rehearsal sessions.
