An Introduction to Plant Structure and Development: Plant Anatomy for the Twenty-First Century

An Introduction to Plant Structure and Development: Plant Anatomy for the Twenty-First Century, 2 Edition by Charles B. Beck

C.ge University Press | 2010 | ISBN: 0521518059 | 464 pages | PDF | 18 MB

A plant anatomy textbook unlike any other on the market today. Carol A. Peterson described the first edition as 'the best book on the subject of plant anatomy since the texts of Esau'. Traditional plant anatomy texts include primarily descriptive aspects of structure, this book not only provides a comprehensive coverage of plant structure, but also introduces aspects of the mechanisms of development, especially the genetic and hormonal controls, and the roles of plasmodesmata and the cytoskeleton. The evolution of plant structure and the relationship between structure and function are also discussed throughout.

Plant Diversity and Evolution: Genotypic and Phenotypic Variation in Higher Plants
CABI (March 31, 2005) | English | 0851999042 | 340 pages | PDF | 5.13 MB

An understanding of plant diversity at both the genome and phenome level is important for both biodiversity conservation and plant breeding. Recent advances in genomics have also resulted in a growth of the subject of plant functional genomics. This book brings these areas together, by reviewing aspects of plant evolution as it relates to variation in plant genomes and associated variations in plant phenomes. Topics covered include chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes, reticulate evolution. Polyploidy, population genetics within a species, the evolution of the flower, diversity in plant cell walls and in secondary metabolism, and the importance of plant diversity in ecology and agriculture. Contributors include leading authorities from Europe, the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand.

Plant Developmental Biology: Methods and Protocols

2010 | 459 | ISBN: 1607617641 | PDF | 15 Mb

The beauty and variety of plants has fascinated mankind for thousands of years, and this fascination continues today as plant developmental biologists discover mechanisms that control the establishment of specialized cell types, tissues, and organs from the fertilized egg during a plant’s life. In Plant Developmental Biology: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers provide a collection of protocols for many of the common experimental approaches in plant developmental biology, including diverse methods that range from grafting over bimolecular fluorescence complementation to chromatin immunoprecipitation. Chapters are divided into six major parts: growth protocols, manipulation of gene activity, assaying developmental phenotypes, assaying gene activity, testing protein-protein interactions, and probing chromatin. Composed in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, each chapter contains a brief introduction, step-by-step methods, a list of necessary materials, and a Notes section which shares tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Comprehensive and revolutionary, Plant Developmental Biology: Methods and Protocols is an essential guide for all plant developmental geneticists, biochemists, and researchers in stress physiology and plant nutrition. ...

The life cycle of a plant can be truly remarkable to observe, and the energy of plant life can be truly mystifying; consider how certain environments are inhospitable to life, yet they're sprinkled with various forms of vegetation. Plant reproduction can occur asexually or sexually; the method of reproduction sets the stage for the plant's growth and maturity. This flourishing volume examines the processes of plant reproduction and the stages of plant life, while also spotlighting the role of plants in various ecological settings.

Most people believe zombies are a recent phenomenon that grew out of comic books, movies and TV. The truth is very different. This two-hour special explores the real story of zombies beginning at the dawn of civilization and continuing right through to today. The first written reference to zombies can be found in the Epic of Gilgamesh, mankind’s oldest work of literature. A look at both the old and new testaments of The Bible reveal numerous stories of the undead. We’ll detail how Europe’s Black Plague became one of the most prolific periods for myths and legends about zombies. Find out why Viking legends believed zombies were nearly indestructible except by decapitation or immolation. Examine other zombie legends from around the world, including secret stories of China’s Terra Cotta Warriors and the voodoo rituals of Haiti. See how modern science added a whole new twist on zombies beginning with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Plant Mitochondria
548 Pages | ISBN: 0387897801 | PDF | 7 MB

Mitochondria are the product of a long evolutionary history. It is now a well established fact that mitochondria did evolve from free living bacteria being the common ancestor of both, eukaryotic mitochondria and α-proteobacteria. Advances in genome sequencing, the establishment of in organello and in vitro assays to name only a few, contributed significantly to advances in plant mitochondrial research. Second generation sequencing and the ability to directly sequence and analyse the whole plant transcriptome certainly will help to develop the research on plant mitochondria to another level in the future. In this book the current knowledge about plant mitochondria is presented in a series of detailed chapters, which have been organized in five main sections: (i) dynamics, genes and genomes; (ii) transcription and RNA processing; (iii) translation and import; (iv) biochemistry, regulation and function; and (v) mitochondrial dysfunction and repair. These sections consist of two to five chapters, each written by well-known specialists in the field. This book thus provides a comprehensive inside in the field of plant mitochondria for the specialist. The addition of a glossary and text boxes to each chapter provides easy access for readers from other subjects and hopefully will attract young scientist to the fascinating and exiting field of plant mitochondria. Frank Kempken graduated from the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. He is professor for genetics and molecular biology in botany at the Christian-Albrechts-University at Kiel, Germany.
