Suicide and Attempted Suicide: Methods and Consequences

Suicide and Attempted Suicide: Methods and Consequences by Geo Stone

Carroll & Graf Pub | 1999-02 | ISBN: 0786704926 | 480 pages | PDF | 18 MB

The book is divided into two parts. The first half outlines a wide range of suicide-related topics: history of suicide; sociological, biological, and psychiatric views; why people kill themselves; intervention in suicide; assisted suicide in terminal illness; "living wills" and other advance directives; the practice of euthanasia in the Netherlands and in the US. The second half is an examination of how people kill themselves: This section describes, in sometimes-gory detail: (1) methods people use to commit suicide; (2) the medical consequences of suicide attempts; (3) how to carry out a safe suicidal gesture; (4) how to commit suicide as non-traumatically as possible. You may find parts of it disturbing. But the consequences of ignorance are more disturbing: botched suicides, accidental deaths and maimed survivors, slow and painful deaths. Every 18 minutes someone in the United States kills himself. A few are younger than ten years old; others over ninety. Between seven-and-a-half and sixteen percent take more than a day to die.

This box set earns the "deluxe" designation not only because of its handsome packaging, insightful essays by Holiday scholars, and testimonials from the likes of Tony Bennett, Sonny Rollins, and Etta James, but also because of the vastly improved remastered sound that makes Lady Day the definitive issue of Billie Holiday's pivotal 1930s and '40s Columbia/Vocalion/Brunswick/OKeh oeuvre. The sides here include epochal collaborations with Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, and others. Six-plus discs chronologically present 151 masters, with the rest of the 10 CDs' space given to alternate takes and radio air checks.
It was during the early years of this period, of course, that Holiday quickly developed into one of the 20th century's vocal monuments. Her incisive way with lyric and melody, often deploying playfulness, wit, and pain in a single song, became a model for both many a female singer, as well as Frank Sinatra and Marvin Gaye. These are records to be endlessly replayed for many kinds of appreciation. Played end to end, they introduce ideals of groove and emotional expression that remain fresh and even startling many years on. Lady Day is not only a perfect example of how to reissue key material, but is an album that will stand as a beacon for veteran Holiday fans and for the new ones it will no doubt attract. --Rickey Wright

Girls Will Be Girls, Vol. 1 is for collectors whose interest in 1960s girl groups has taken them beyond hits into the realm of demos, obscurities, and previously unreleased material. The recordings, made between 1962-1966, are drawn from a number of labels such as Colpix, Dimension, Roulette, Jubilee, and DynoVoice. The Jewels' "But I Do" is the sole chart hit, having peaked at a lofty number 130 in 1965. The Tammys, Diane Renay, and the Bobbettes will be familiar to many listeners, while Jessica James (aka Peggy Santiglia) may not be well known on her own but was the lead singer of the Angels. An obscure hitless group called the Boyd Sisters steal the show with their dramatic renditions of angst-ridden teen ballads like "I Can't Wait ('Till I Grow Up)." The Barry Sisters show that they could make passable '60s-style girl group records, and Marie Applebee delivers -- in master and demo versions -- the bizarre "The Boy Who Took My Heart (Took My Mind)." The centerpiece for collectors may be the three cuts from the long-lost demonstration tape that got the Essex signed to Roulette Records. The recordings on Girls Will Be Girls, Vol. 1, commercial failure notwithstanding, were held to high production standards and masterminded by talented people, so fans of the genre will find much of interest.

That's right: Ten CDs with everything Billie Holiday recorded on Verve Records between 1945 and her death in 1959--not only the songs, but concert introductions, some of the rehearsals, and between-take studio chatter, too. All of which makes for a definitive portrait of Lady Day in her final years. For a long time these recordings were disparaged because it was said her voice was no longer fine and mellow, "ravaged" by hard living, jail time, booze, and drugs. And there's no question that her later tone is darker, more brittle and unstable than it had been in the '30s--but somehow I find myself listening to this music more often than those Brunswick/Columbia or Decca sides, anyway. Like Frank Sinatra, who so often paid tribute to her influence, Holiday's artistry was never based on virtuosity; it was about interpretation, bringing out the emotions in a song and giving a personal reading. She never stopped doing that, and for all the "strange fruit" you'll find in this collection, it's a gold mine. --Jim Emerson

Fighting Suicide Bombing: A Worldwide Campaign for Life

2006 | 320 | ISBN: 0275993361 | PDF | 1 Mb

"Suicide bombing, argues Charny, is a product of an Islamic fundamentalist Culture of Death that is at war with a Judeo-Christian Culture of Life. Proceeding from this basic premise, he explores the psychology of suicide bombing and tends to what he thinks are its implications. Thus suicide bombers become a pathological aspect of Islam that needs to be confronted with a spiritual battle over values (which includes limiting the speech of those Muslims thought to be promoting the Culture of Death), as well as police-military force."–Reference & Research Book News...
